Porous asphalt is something used by contractors and town planners to help manage the problem of excess storm water.

In nature, when it rains, the rain goes into the ground and the soil filters it. This will in turn run into the nearest rivers, streams and lakes, minimizing the risk of flooding.

Unfortunately, when rain falls in a city or a built area, this is not what happens. Both the rain and the snow can turn into runoff. And this can be a problem for flooding.

The water may contain contamination, which is immediately drained into the water system, without any of the natural filtration it should do.

For this reason, we have to help solve this problem and manage the storm water impact in artificially created environments, such as towns and cities.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Porous asphalt can help because the excess water can drain into it and it will go through, to the stone bed and soil beneath it. This way, the water can go back into the rivers and streams as it would do naturally. It also helps reduce flooding risk in highly built up areas.

Any of the contaminants that are in the water also get drained off by the soil, making the whole process much more natural.

LONG LASTING

Porous asphalt can have a life of up to twenty years approximately from the time it is first laid.

For up to two decades it can process and handle excess rainwater, making the area less likely to flood.

RESILIENT

Porous asphalt is strong and capable of being used in areas such as parking lots and other areas which see a large volume of traffic on them.

They can be used successfully in play areas, walkways and even highways, with a high volume of heavy traffic on them.

They can certainly be used in your domestic driveway projects.

ECONOMICAL

If you are a business owner or your business has a parking lot, porous asphalt might be able to save you money.

This is because if you live somewhere that sees a lot of rain and storms, some local authorities will charge your business for being able to use the storm sewer system when a surge of rain comes your way.

You may also have had to invest in storm water maintenance such as a retention pond, to deal with the run off. This is land that could be put to better and more profitable use for your company.
