THE NEW TOWN HALL Over 200 Kent citizens watched with growing enthusiasm as Sen. Leibell presented the site plans, sketches of the new buildings, the time table for their construction and the finances of a possible new Kent Municipal Center. Phase one would include a library, a Town Hall and a police station. In phase two: senior citizen cottages and a community center and park would be added. All this is to be located on the 40 or more acres of land just East of our Recycling Center. The cost to the average household will be a little over $50 a year for phase one. Why so low? The Town would be able to sell or rent three buildings: its present town hall, the vacated firehouse and library. It can also float a 30 year bond for about the same money it now pays for renting its present store fronts. Considerable funding from Albany is also part of the deal. The Senator is ready to act at once. He has supplied all the plans, the engineer, the architect and the construction foreman and company. They estimated phase one could be complete in a year and a half. The Town Board seemed ready to act. The only thing that would delay them is if 10% of the, eligible voters of Kent sign a petition requesting a public referendum. The problem with any delay is that the County, when it gave this land to the Town, included a clause which states that the land goes back to the County if it is no tbeing used for municipal purposes by October of this year. However, if we can judge by the enthusiastic response of the people present at Thursday's meeting, there will be no referendum & no delay.

So; it seems that the recycling center will not be lost in the wilderness much longer. The new firehouse is going up just across the street from us, the library and town hall and senior citizen housing will be on our other side. We welcome them all. THE FLOOR AGAIN Any day now our contractor should be pouring the floor of our new building. When that happens we'll move out of the building and back into our shelter. When the concrete has cured, we ll move back and dismantle the shelter. We need the extra parking space that the shelter now occupies. NON-TRADITIONAL RECYCLING Your coat hangers and some magazines go to a local launderette. Plastic bags go to the A & P. Paper bags go to a local business, furniture to some rehabilitation centers & clothing to local thrift shops. Egg cartons are going to a co-operative farm in Patterson. Plastic peanuts help a local businessman and our "free table" helps all of us. What we are asking for is: do you have any other ideas ..we're certain that you do! So let us know. |
