NEARBY

Many nearby towns have discovered that curbside pick up does not solve their disposal problems. One sticky problem is disposal of bulk items. Most towns have one bulk item day per year. Residents bring in their bulk items, the town places them in dumpsters and, at the end of the day, they are carted away. Pound Ridge, for example, has an annual Spring Cleanup day. They charge $15 per car; $20 per station wagon or van; and, $50 per pickup. Everything is put into the big roll-offs and hauled away at the end of the day. Its expensive. Towns must pay the workers who unload the cars, they must rent the roll-offs and pay for their final unloading. It can also present more serious problems.

At Kent's last annual clean up day cars, waiting to unload, were lined up along 311 and spilling over onto Route 52. There was such traffic confusion at the unloading site that one of the workers was seriously injured.

We also have problems with bulk items but, with your help, they are none of the above! We don't have the traffic problems because you can bring in your bulk items any Saturday. Our disposal costs are low because you recycle on the spot. (Separating metallic bulk items is very cost effective). The Town pays nothing for its bulk item collection because our volunteers do it free of charge. Our one problem is fixing on a price scale that's fair to all. For example a fair price on items that can be burned is $1 for every ten pounds. The price for metallic items is about half that but it can vary depending upon whom we can get to dispose of them. The big problem is that we have no scale and have to guess at weight. This can result in us changing our mind when unloading! .
