| THE TOWER & THE CHIEF
Are you going to the rededication of the Mount Nimham Firetower today? The festivities start at 2 PM at the base of the tower which is atop Mt Nimham. There are two ways to go: (1) park at the lower County Park (the one with the playground), and a county bus will shuttle you to the top of Mt Nimham. (2) You can also hike to the tower. Be at the Park at 12:30 and "Marty" will guide the 2 mile hike. You'll need good boots & water! It's UPHILL & downhill most of the way! In case of rain all festivities will be held inside the big barn at the lower county park. There will be a native American drumming circle (Gil Tarbox); a story telling for children of all ages (Nancy Andrey) and a music sing along (John Cohen) Refreshment, tee shirts and other memorabilia will be for sale. The idea here is to have some fun and also collect money for a very good cause. The KCAC is attempting to restore the firetower. Checks are acceptable. Make them out to PLAN-Kent and in the memo blank write "tower". It will then be income tax deductible. Plan-Kent financed the engineering study which concluded that, in spite of vandalism, the tower was in good shape and could be restored. The view from the top of this tower is well worth our effort .

Here is one version of Chief Nimham's history? Chief Nimham convinced some of the local settlers that they should pay rent to him rather than the Over-lords in England. (His point was that he owned the land and; besides, would charge much less rent). The local English courts denied everything and insisted that the overlords be paid. The Chief went to England to appeal their decision. He was wined and dined. (The philosophy of the goodness of the natural man was prevalent in European thought at that time). Then he was taken to court and, surprise, was once again defeated in his claim for ownership of the land of his ancestors. Upon his return to America the revolutionary war broke out. Nimham fought on our side and died for our cause! When peace returned, his people were driven from their homes. Only his mountain remains. BULK ITEMS GOING OVER BIG! Tires $2 (with rims $3) Jim Baker 225-7901 |
