THE BUILDING

We have finally tracked down a bid that is within our means: We have located a metal building for $15,000 and a company that will put in the foundation and erect the structure for $13,000. The only bid up to this point was for a total of $56,000! Go figure. The low bid means that we will have enough money left over to put in electricity etc…

THE COUNTY

We take some of your recyclables to the County: plastics, cardboard and junk mail to be specific. They co-mingle the plastic back in with THEIR glass and tin cans. The cardboard and junk mail are handled separately Why do they co-mingle their plastic, glass jars and tin cans? They have an agreement with AWD one of Danbury's organized carters. AWD takes the co-mingled material to their MRF (material recovery facility) where the glass, plastic and tin cans are separated and then baled and sold.

We could mingle our glass, tin cans and plastic and then take it in to the County except for the fact that their unloading facilities are suitable for our light weight plastic containers but glass and tin cans are too heavy. Also, when our building is complete, we will install a baler & process and sell our own plastic, tin cans, aluminum, cardboard, newspaper and perhaps even junk mail. In the interim we use the County's service as best we can.

THINK GLOBALLY; ACT LOCALLY

In hot weather we frequently have a shortage of volunteers. Don't be bashful. You can join our group anytime. You can stay for an hour or two or for the entire four hours. We welcome one and all! As you no doubt know and as we frequently remind one and all: we are, everyone of us, volunteers. No one at this facility is paid anything. Our income is not from taxation. It is from what you pay for the services we render. Every bit of our income goes into keeping the center running and any profits go into our building program. We have been doing this since 1-1-91! Why? Isn't it obvious that any civilization which does not reuse its natural resources will run out of them? When we started we thought it would be valuable to set an example in our own little corner of the world. Now however we must admit that what keeps us going is the sight of 400 families coming each week, going through all the trouble of separating out all the recyclables & teaching their children to do the same (for a cookie of course). We also like the association with people who "think globally and act locally". Actually however when you get down to, the only alternative to us is: filling the grand canyon with coke bottles.

Speaking of Coke

I've been doing the refundables lately. Next time I will discourse on your drinking habits!!!!
